Lombardy loves you BACK

"Wow we are in Lombardy" tourist promotion video had 800 passes on Broadway.
On the Times Square screens in New York at the end of October there was...the Lombardy.

Times Square is one of the most photographed squares in the world. In addition to the Broadway musicals, it is precisely the giant advertising screens of the latest generation that have made this square an icon of the entire city of New York and the rest of the world. It is estimated that around 300,000 people per day pass from here.

A territorial marketing campaign that wanted to highlight the individual territories and in particular the lakes, the mountains, the culture and the well-being. To reach the widest possible audience, the Region has focused on places of great tourist flow, capable of intercepting both the Italian and foreign markets.

The operation in the Big Apple was edited by Starcom and planned by MediaXchange.

The video shown at Times Square is now available on the YouTube channel of inLOMBARDIA, with others who participated in the contest.

InLOMBARDIA is the official tourist site of Lombardy, full of information, updates, descriptions, images and videos that tell the beauties of the territory, as well as a series of travel proposals, accommodation and services that are offered to tourists in territories.

Halloween or...pumpkins lit? The night of the Lombard "Lumere"

Festival of "Lumere" means pumpkins lit, snacks and entertainment for children and farmer's market...

The tradition comes from far away - the night of All Saints - where, in the Lombardy countryside, they used to create figures and masks that reminded the skulls, to exorcise the idea of death in the days when the worlds of the living and of the dead came into communication.

To create these representations of the dead, the "materials" favorites were the pumpkins that, because of their shape and internal natural cavity, were perfect to get fearful faces and to be illuminated.

from ancient history...

For the Celts this period represented the end of the cycle of the year and the beginning of the new. The Celts were a people dedicated to sheep; in this period, in fact, driven by the first snows, they reported livestock downstream. It was the time of the last harvest, the one composed of apples and chestnuts and in which ended the summer.

It was the last chance to party before the long winter, which would lead them to difficult months and silent, where you would be dedicated to the preparation of tools, instruments and survival care.

The Celts were divided into many clans and often lived away because they were engaged in the defense of their lands, or the conquest of new pastures. This festival, then, was the only time when all clan members were summoned to meetings.

It was a time when the bonds were made stronger. It was so important that anyone who had not been presented at the meeting would be considered "dead" by the clan for a year and a day, until the following year's festival. Moreover, it was thought that nothing and no one, otherwise, could have prevented to participate in the rally.

Once assembled it counted the cattle and evaluated how many leaders would be able to survive the winter, due to hay stocks available. The other animals were butchered and divided equally among all the families of the clan, thus ensuring everyone to face the most difficult season, the snow and frost. The blood was used to mix the pudding, which was consumed during the festivities.

It was also lit a sacred fire with the use of wood, also considered sacred by the Druids. In the huts all extinguished the fire, to indicate the end of a cycle, and went to the Holy Fire to get the new Flame, which would bring new light and energy in their homes.

In these traditions have their roots in the "lamp carried around", the food and drink to share and the cult of the dead, as for the Celts respect and devotion to the ancestors was indispensable. On these nights, considered magical, the veil between the worlds was, in fact, "thinner" and it was possible to feel the presence of the souls of ancestors.

Time is right for the FIGS Festival

8-9-10-11 September 2016 from Casale Litta (VA) :

Back three years after the long-awaited Festival of Figs in Casale Litta (VA), now in its fourteenth year.

A festival that attracts large audiences from all neighboring provinces. The country is in turmoil for the organization of the festively decorated courtyards, where you can taste typical dishes and delicacies made from figs, the real stars of the event.

Respecting the tradition, the country will evoke the atmosphere of the past: the historian oven dated 1792, restored thanks to the contributions of the previous editions, will light up for the opportunity to churn out the typical "brüsela cui fich" (brüsela with figs).

A rich program of yesterday and today music to listen and eating traditional dishes, in an atmosphere that evokes the past. Starting from Thursday with DJ Vigor, Fridays with Paolo Argento and the Monkeyscream Cabarock and Saturday to attend the fascinating fireworks in collaboration with Setti Fireworks.

Sunday will start early in the morning with crafts market between the courts of the country. Guests can attend a race of historic cars and, after lunch, in the name of tradition, your children will have fun with numerous activities including magic shows, pony rides, petting zoo.

The day will continue with boxing demonstrations, competitions with chainsaw cutting and at 16.30, directly from Italy's Got Talent, will perform the Grugliasco Gymnastic Company with acrobatics and circus atmosphere.

The day will continue with the trademark of the "Matt de Casàa" (the organizers of the event for this year): "L'Aperitivo del Viandante" (The Aperitif of the Wayfarer), accompanied by the music of Mickey&Cindy.

Let yourself be enchanted by the rural atmosphere, the corners art, photography and flowers...

The Universal Judgment...is it still alive?

Circle of hell in a group of souls expiating guilt: sinners actors walking in circles, clinging to each other, naked, lenses; prisoners of their marcantonii inspired from the air, their Juliets young and beautiful, of fatty attendants, of Macbeth by the outstretched hands of prisoners agreements, tics, collective neurosis, no longer able to leave the scene.

Beasts of the scene (Bestie di scena) is a point of arrival for Emma Dante at the Piccolo Theater in Milan, but also in his artistic career: for a theater woman that shapes up to hold the living body of someone who is on the stage, was an inevitable event, we full of expectations, a hell of acting work.

It is a project that tells the inability to act, the action failed and the deep unease to appear naked in front of an audience. The actor is the one who rushes to the scene driven by superhuman strength; crossed the border reborn, it breaks the membrane of the lungs and breathes as if breathing for the first time. But as soon crosses the public's eyes, ashamed, do not resist, would like to get away and have no way out, the output is prohibited, coming from fifth fire signals, it is impossible to hide. The actor is obliged to remain. Trembling, vulnerable, in front of us. She investigates her nakedness, essence, his bestial nature, the stage that pollute and whose fence can not get out. In the bare stage, surrounded by a backdrop and six scenes, a group of souls walking in a circle, clinging to each other in a silent patrol.

More about the Universal Judgment for the Lombard art

On the hills south of Varese, wrapped in green, it stands the church of Santa Maria Annunciata, near the village of Brunello. Easily visible to those passing on the nearby road nearby, the small church has had a magnificent view of Mount Rosa.

Erected between 1200 and 1300, Santa Maria Annunciata, with the nearby convent, was part of the order of the humiliated, a religious congregation dedicated to diverse and thriving textile and financial assets, which made him very rich and unfortunately corrupted.

Inside the church there are some frescoes of the fifteenth century, of which the most important and also the largest, representing Universal Judgment, a subject that seems to be the only currently existing in Lombardy. The author does not know much, but in the documents is suspect as the Brunello master.

A curious note is that the frescoes were discovered only in 1935 by the local parish priest, under a rich layer of lime whitewashing, and perhaps this treatment was used to disinfect the walls, in order to finally defeat the plague that struck the Varesotto in 1576.

A new "Formula 1".

From the races into the districts...

Pedal cars are born in Italy in 1986 in the province of Pavia, more precisely in Travacò Siccomario, initially to perform races into the districts.

Later, the new sports began to enthuse more and more people who built the other new machines by increasing the number of the same. Now, pedal cars are engaged in a league that affects the whole of Italy and a European championship held in turns between France, England and Italy itself; significant was that of 2008 where it was held in Reana del Royale in the province of Udine.

Today the race of pedal machines has been named "F1 pedal", with a league that is destined to bring even more people in the future, involving more and more new and diverse audiences with appointments, in addition to the new team forming to create new and more powerful machines.

Fly with the MOON of Volandia

Volandia, the museum dedicated to the history of flight in a step from the airport of Malpensa, in the weekend of May 28 and 29 proposes a very special event, dedicated to the Moon, the silver star that from the Greeks to the present day did to dream and inspire writers, poets and actors.

In fact, in the Museum Park will be on display in hall space - Planetarium, a fragment of the Moon, as part of the traveling show "I bring you the Moon", which since April 2 leads around Italy in seventy stages an authentic sample from lunar soil, until June 10, when the rock will return to Houston, in the US, where the NASA control center with lunar samples collected by Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972.

The fragment exposed to Volandia Moon weighs less than 146 grams and is one of the largest among those that NASA has allowed them to be exposed.

Its age dates back 3.9 billion years old and the oldest of 99.99% between all terrestrial rocks found on the surface of the celestial body.

Astronauts have chosen and picked up this fragment on the moon in February 1971, to 300 meters from where was the place of landing, during the last lunar mission, Apollo 14, which closed the cycle started in 1969 with the arrival of Armstrong and Aldrin on the Moon, first time in human history.

Now, if this remarkable specimen of the Moon can be visited in Hall of Space and Museum of Flight Park, it is largely through the efforts of Luigi Pizzimenti, curator of the Pavilion of Volandia Space, accredited by the Lunar Sample Laboratory Facility at NASA.

In fact, it was he himself who travel to Houston to personally pick up the moon rock whose value is really invaluable, especially if we divide the cost of the Apollo missions, which is about $ 170 billion today, for 382 kilograms of lunar samples returned to Earth, it is understood that this sample has theoretically worth about $70 million.

But really this unique opportunity has been made possible thanks to American Airlines, the largest airline in the world, with as many as 6,700 flights per day globally, which, as the sole sponsor of the initiative, has provided tickets to the journey from Malpensa to Houston Pizzamenti.

To celebrate the occasion, it will also open the capsule Casper, perfect reproduction of the Apollo 16 command module, full instrumentation with control panels and on-board computer, where you can climb like a real space mission, at a cost of  2 euro for children and 3 euro for more than 12 years.

Also Sunday, May 29 at 16.30 there will be the conference "I bring you the Moon" by Luigi Pizzimenti, the curator of the Pavilion of Volandia Area.

To participate in the conference it is advisable to book by writing to booking@volandia.it

Celebrating the Italian excellences: 3rd Intenational EX LIBRIS meeting "Bodio Lomnago 2016"

What about EX LIBRIS

For those not clear what a "ex libris", we can briefly say that it is a custom label with a not necessarily artistic design and engraved with the name and surname of the owner of a collection of books. From large gifts libraries, university or monastic, to small personal collection of books on history, literature and gastronomy, all of which can be labeled with a bookplate that applied on the inside cover of each book to certify their property and memories... to those who have had to borrow, to make it!

The invention of printing in the second half of the sixteenth century until the late nineteenth century, the bookplate was essentially heraldic and the exclusive domain of the noble classes; the twentieth century and the expansion of culture to wider layers of the population, the bookplates have become hallmark of medical libraries, enlightened lawyers and traders who that giving talented artists the commission of their production, they have given way to their spread, turning them into true works of art.

Another aspect of the ex libris is the world of collecting virus that fascinates hundreds of amateurs all over the world. In each country they were born associations of artists, collectors and bibliophiles who write, meet, talk, and when the world was still divided by borders and walls, the bookplate transcended all barriers and uniting people, becoming an instrument of exchange cultural and opportunity for friendship between peoples.

Brixia: a Roman city in northern Italy. Special exhibition in Santa Giulia Museum.

The ancient history of Brescia - Lombardy and the land that surrounds it, it's investigated by the exhibition "Rome and the people of the Po river" at the Museum of Santa Giulia in Brescia. The rich and varied exhibition will appeal especially to those who waited for the opportunity not only to understand the origin of Brixia - Brescia - Roman city, but also to deepen those twists of events, lives of famous actors and social phenomena that have marked the territory, between the third and the first century BC, leading to the Romanization of the people of the Po river.

Conceived as a journey, the exhibition is divided into 12 stages. The story highlights the meeting between the Romans and the people of the Po river, with their customs and traditions. In the third section entirely devoted to the war, a major theme of the exhibition, are presented a series of outstanding examples of helmets and armor, while the fourth section continues the discussion by illustrating the war and after the Roman propaganda.

At last, it explains the perfect synthesis of the extraordinary meeting of civilizations and Catullus, whose only existing representation closes the exhibition.

"The exhibition in Brescia wants to tell this story coming out from the traditional scheme of the clash between Rome and local people, considered to be integrated into the semi-barbarous and classical civilization, to show instead the reality of a confrontation that had many facets" - said Luigi Malnati, the exhibition curator.

This is also testified beautifully with the Archaeological Park of Brescia, the most important, extensive and preserved in northern Italy.

Do you know...The legend of Epona?

September on the UK Pavilion @Milan Expo 2015

‘’Bleak September's mist and mud, is enough to chill the blood.’’
Ok it’s not actually been that bad, not here anyway and not at the start of the month, but as Expo moves into its final stages we have had some spectacular thunder storms and the temperatures have been noticeably cooling. In fact from the way our local staff have been reacting with scarves and extra layers, you would think the next ice age has started.
Of course from a British perspective, this is a very mild autumn and is actually giving delegations a genuine experience, a tour of the UK Pavilion with weather to match. Anyway at least I avoided this August in the UK, I remember missing summer last year, I was in the bathroom.
The weather hasn’t affected visitor numbers either, which continue to climb. There have been several days where we’ve had over 30,000 people in a single day and we understand from central Expo figures something like 12% of all visitors to the site have been to the UK Pavilion. An amazing achievement when you consider people are visiting around 5 Pavilions on average and there are over 140 to choose from.
We’ve also had our fair share of celebrities on the Pavilion, including one random cross over between the Teletubbies  and Sir Paul Smith, which must go down as one of the most surreal to date. Not sure if the meeting had an affect on the future direction of British fashion. Maybe the next Paul Smith collection will see a lot of primary colours and be a bit less fitted.
Hosting ‘Scottish Week’ was a real delight, with a tasting of malt whiskies and craft beers, bagpipes and marching bands, award-winning chef Tom Lewis demonstrating Scottish cookery (including a real fusion dish: haggis pizza) and various exhibitions and performers (maybe the only time in Italian history that the Loch Ness Monster has made an appearance in Milan).
We were also very pleased to be able to celebrate HM The Queen becoming the longest reigning monarch in British history on the 9 September. Representatives from many countries turned out to wish HM well and we even turned the lights in the Hive to red, white and blue for one night only, so even the bees back in the UK could show their loyalty.
On one final and personal note, avid readers of this blog (of which I am sure are many, quite apart from my own family) will remember I complained in August about the drycleaners being shut. I’m sorry to tell you when I went back to collect some suits on Saturday just gone, it was (un)expectedly, still shut.
It’s getting to the stage where my remaining suits and jackets are clashing with my pocket handkerchiefs. It’s enough to make your stiff upper lip quiver.
Maybe I should have asked Sir Paul for a suit to tide me over.
