Mamma mia! The power of motherhood in "The Great Mother" Milan exhibition

Through the works of over a hundred international artists, "The Great Mother" examines the iconography and the representation of motherhood in twentieth-century, the avant-garde to the present day.

Venuses from the Paleolithic to post-feminism 'bad girls', through the age-old tradition of religious painting with its many scenes of motherhood, the history of art and culture have often place in its center the figure of the mother, the symbol of creativity and metaphor of the very definition of art.

Archetype and primordial image, mother and his family version "Mamma" are also stereotypes intimately linked to the image of Italy. It's a show about the power of women: starting from the representation of motherhood, exposure browsing a century of clashes and battles between emancipation and tradition, telling the transformations of sexuality, genres and the perception of the body and its desires.

With a display that covers an area of about 2,000 square meters on the main floor of the Royal Palace, The Great Mother brings contemporary art to the heart of the program of Expo in the city, connecting the history of the most pressing issues of our time, mixing the contemporary with the story, juxtaposing works today and historical masterpieces, unknown gems and artifacts from the world of cinema and literature, and evoking a rich fabric of associations, memories and images.

The exhibition is sponsored by the City of Milan Culture, created and produced by Nicola Trussardi Foundation together with the Royal Palace for  "Expo in the city" 2015.
